Biography

Alex Frei received his professional education in Munich with Jutta Röthel, at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam and at the Alvin Ailey School in New York.

He was a soloist with Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, the Augsburg Ballet and with the dance company of the Gärtnerplatz Theatre in Munich. He was also a guest artist with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. He has worked with numerous choreographers, including Philip Taylor, Blanca Li, Carolyn Carlson, Cayetano Soto, Davide Bombana, Christian Spuck, Caroline Finn, Aszure Barton and Crystal Pite. He has performed in pieces by Jiří Kylián, Nacho Duato and Mauro Bigonzetti. He was assistant choreographer for the premiere of Davide Bombana’s Mare Nostrum at the National Ballet in Sarajevo.

His musical-theater career includes the productions of 42nd Street, Copacabana, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Marilyn, La Cage aux Folles, Cats, Cabaret, Anything Goes, Bodyguard, Priscilla – Queen of the Desert and the original production of Chicago in Germany, Denmark and France as the "Spirit of Fosse" as well as Assistant Dance Captain. He was also Resident Director for the European tour of Flashdance .

Alex discovered a great passion for choreography at a very young age and has been creating during his entire stage career. His work has been performed by the dance company of the Gärtnerplatz Theater, the Augsburg Ballet and the Geraldine Armstrong Dance Ensemble. In London he has choreographed the musical Once on This Island  for WAC Performing Arts College. He has created work for the Bielefeld Dance Academy, the Abraxas Musical Academy and the Theater Academy August Everding in Munich. He also staged Ann Reinking's original choreography of the musical Chicago for the musical-theater department of Les Cours Florent in Paris.

In the 2020/2021 season he joined the Gärtnerplatz theater as resident choreographer and rehearsal director. In 2021 he completed his master’s degree in opera directing at the Accademia dell’Opera di Verona and shortly after he assisted theatre director Josef E. Köpplinger in the production of Die Fledermaus for the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence as well as for the Gärtnerplatz Theater.
 

Alex Frei has choreographed  the musicals The Little Mermaid at the theater in Kempten, Next to Normal and La Cage Aux Folles at the Bühnen Bern, the opera The Merry Wives of Windsor and the new operetta Oh! Oh! Amelio at the Gärtnerplatztheater and most recently, the musical Mozart! at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
